It is strongly recommended that participants read the details and FAQ before applying for the event.

  • What do I need to know before I apply?

There will be a photo shoot on Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, September 1st (more information below); however, we understand that contestants are busy with their own schedules so all contestants may drop their dish off at the WWOOF Korea office.

  • Where is the WWOOF Korea Office?

  • When is the deadline? When is the actual event?

The deadline for applications is August 20th (Monday).

The cooking contest event will take place on October 3rd (Thursday).

  • How can I apply?

  • Will my costs be covered?

Yes, two hundred thousand Won (200,000 KRW) will be provided after the contest for each participating team. This figure will cover transportation, ingredients, kitchen tools and cookware (please note that participants will have to commute and cook twice, once for the photo shoot and once for the event).

  • What is the prize pool like and how will it be divided?

The total prize pool is 2,700,000 KRW (two million seven hundred thousand Korean Won). The prize pool break down is:

l   First place –         500,000 KRW

l   Second place –    400,000 KRW

l   Third place –        300,000 KRW

l   Every team will receive an organic food gift box priced at 50,000 KRW

  • Where will the contest take place?

The contest will take place at the Namyangju Sports Culture Center:

  • How can I get to the Namyangju Sports Culture Center?

You can take the Central Line (Jungang Seon) subway to Donong station; there will be shuttle buses from the subway station.

There will also be designated shuttle buses specifically for the AsiO Gusto festival that will depart from Jamsil, Guri and other central locations. The specific details will be released in September and we will notify all contestants.

  • Are there any hotels or motels by Namyangju Sports Culture Center?

There are motels and hotels by Donong station. The stop before Donong station is Guri station, which has many hotels and motels.

  • What will be provided?

All basic kitchen utensils will be provided but participants will be required to bring their own cookware and any other items not listed below:

 Utensils:

l   Kitchen knife
l   Cutting board
l   Corn oil
l   Cooking hat
l   Apron
l   Towel
l   Disposable gloves
l   Water
l   One burner gas range (two burners can be arranged but participants must let us know beforehand)
l   30cm white plates (participants may bring their own plates and bowls)

Facility:

l   Microwave and oven (participants will have to share use)
l   Cooler boxes (unfortunately no refrigerator will be available)
l   Electricity outlets will be available at a shared table

  • How much time will I be given to cook?

For the day of the photo shoot (August 31st, September 1st), you will not have a set time limit.

On the day of the event, all participants will be given one hour to prepare their dish:

Preparation:  10:00AM – 11:00AM
Cooking:        11:00AM – 12:00AM

  •  Can I prepare in advance? How much can/should I prepare?

Yes, participants may prepare whatever is necessary for their dish in advance; however, save enough work to show off the cooking process of your dish!

  • How many times will I cook my dish and how many people will I be cooking for?

Participants will be cooking their dish twice: once for the photo shoot and once for the actual event.

 Photo shoot:     1 portion
Contest:             6 – 8 portions

  • Can you explain more about the photo shoot? What if I cannot attend?

The photo shoot will be done by a professional photographer and food stylist; each team’s dish will be photographed. At the event, there will be a gallery and a poster size photo of each dish will be up on display with a detailed description. In addition, there will be a compilation book of all the dishes and recipes.

 The photo shoot will take place on both Saturday, August 31st and Sunday, September 1st. We understand that all participants are busy with their own schedule, so each team may drop their dish off at our office. We will take all the dishes to Namyangju ourselves. We believe this will make it easier for all contestants. Please drop your dishes off at our office between Saturday, August 30th and Sunday, August 31st.

  • How many judges will there be and how will the dishes be judged?

There will be a total of 20 judges. The best dish will be the team with the most votes; votes will be given based on taste, style and presentation.

  • What nationality will the judges be?

The judges have not been chosen yet, but they will be a mixture of both Koreans and foreigners. When the judges are picked, we will send out another email notifying contestants.

  • How many other participating teams will be there be?

There will be a total of 30 teams and each team will have 1 – 2 people.

  • When does the cooking contest end and will I have time to see the AsiO Gusto festival?

The cooking contest is scheduled to end at around 2:00PM and so participants will have plenty of free time to see the festival; AsiO Gusto continues until October 6th.
